Layla

My mother is not from this time

She’s from the 1600’s.

Columbus brought in Layla

That’s my mother and her people

After Laylo and her people.

My mum sure does make noise

I would put on a skirt

my favorite skirt

to go to class

She would shout, “skimpy”

I would tell her she’s a slave

“Put on Independence colors, y’all are celebrating”

She would lecture

I would give in

and just put on black

”But why do you care, what’s Independence

to you?”

I would ask

and she would lecture once again

”I may not have a reason

to celebrate but you do

Baby look around

At everything our people have done

You have such opportunities

I can only dream of having

Education

Money

Health Care

Freedom, my daughter

You have it all!

Had we not been able

to take care of ourselves

who knows when we

would be awarded the honor

of being an Independent land

So celebrate it all

Push forward for more reason

to celebrate

While not forgetting

the people who died

to get you there

Know that God had a plan

when he put me here

So he surely has a plan

now that you’re here

so celebrate it all

celebrate the sea

celebrate the sun

celebrate the people

but most important

and dont you ever forget

celebrate God

who gave us the breathe of life

that we may see this day

and know of those

who marched for this day

so celebrate it all

and never forget”
