Neighbour as Yourself
With all the isms of life, it was inevitable,
But to be accused by your own neighbours and brethren...
For Deleveaux, Moncur, Bodie you'll always be,
No matter how you deny your Haitian ancestry.
Once upon a time we would mingle and trade,
But since our decline, you hang your heads in shame,
We became heathens, savages, and parasites too,
Too ugly and poor to be counted among you.
Protect the borders, Bahamas for Bahamians,
Citizenship allowed for all except Haitians,
Evictions from lands purchased from frauds,
Deportment for rejecting hard labour for coins.
Suppose that the world turned its back on your suffering
after plundering your nation of its valuable resources?
And if Haiti should be restored to former glory,
Should we still be compelled to remember you fondly?
